follow-up: what did i do wrong?

i’m only a triple double away from picking up the phone

🤟😌🤟

it gets spicy at the town hall meetings
happy Tuesday y’all :)
today’s volume focuses on some of my favorite DJ / artist mixes. as mentioned in the most recent interlude, i love throwing on a mix by one of my favorite artists when i’m tired of curating for myself. it’s especially dope to see what they’re listening to, because i can only listen to my favorite songs for so long before i need a break lmao
they’re especially great when the transitions are smooth as hell. like Kenny Beats going from “Danny Glover” to “Beef”:
(random fact: Kenny Beats is 6’7 lmao)
i also love that mixes can go all the way from divey live streams from a basement to cinematic production like this:
huge shoutout to YouTube commenters for doing the dirty work and timestamping the tracklist 🙏
simply put: i love listening to what my favorite artists are listening to! it’s going to the oracle of their inspiration
and with that, let's get to the music for the week ❤️🔥

p.s. - i want more recs so please comment with some of your favs 😌
this week’s music ⤵️
Another Mixtape (2018)
Breakbot
Highlighted song:
Breakbot is a French producer / DJ whose most recent full length LP was back in 2016(!!), so i’m v grateful that he’s released several mixes since
all his music has funky ass bass lines and you can tell he’s inspired by old school disco, house, and R&B. best believe i’m eating up whatever mix he puts out
this Teddy song only plays for like 5 seconds (starts at 5:24) but the transition is sooooo sultry. i couldn’t stop thinking about it so i had to give it some shine. from top to bottom, this will catch your ear no matter your age
and if you like this, you’ll love his Sunday Selecta mix:
Colombian Salsa Records with Gia Fu (2021)
My Analog Journal
Highlighted song:
i talked with my dad recently about the music he grew up on and he talked about all the parties my abuelo and abuelita would throw. my Colombian side is from Bogotá and they first relocated to to Baltimore when immigrating stateside
once finding the Colombian community there, they’d get together for any occasion to eat, drink, and dance. could be some random kid’s birthday (which they’d celebrate), but they were really there for the communal aspect
my abuelo had hellaaa old Colombian records with our surname scribbled by pencil to let people know they were his. my dad showed me one of them recently and there was a nice lil note as well, which was a trip down memory lane
i love this mix especially (along with loving anything My Analog Journal puts out) because Gia is having fun by dancing and truly enjoying the vibe. it was a reminder that not every DJ set has to have be a grandiose electronic set with 7.9 beat drops per 10 min
this is a great way to get in touch with my heritage 😌
Live from The Basement (2022)
Kabza de Small
Highlighted song:
i had another mix here but once i discovered this, it blew me away so much that i had to include. (if you’re curious, it was Four Tet for The Lot Radio which has a delicious Selena Gomez remix)
i featured Kabza De Small back in Volume 123, highlighting how he’s one of the pioneers of Ampiano, which is a blend of deep house, jazz and lounge music that started in South Africa
this mix feels like one big ass song and that’s because Kabza moves effortlessly from track to track. if you need another reason to check this out, i’ll let this YouTube comment make its case:

Live From The Basement (2022)
Channel Tres
Highlighted song:
Channel Tres is the perfect blend of rap, funk, and house music. yes the whole mix is great but i really love the coordinated dancing in the background (around 1:15:00):
just having fun with friends while listening to music. what more could you ask for?
