i’ve been thinking a lot about concerts lately, especially with The Weeknd recently releasing a live album from one of his shows in LA. the recording is hella high quality and he goes deep in his discography which makes it *chef’s kiss*
with live albums, i love that you can hear the one-of-one performance that come with great artists. it captures why going to concerts is worth it!
conversely, one of my biggest pet peeves is when artists play the entire song in the background to carry their performance. Playboi Carti comes to mind, although you’re going to see him just for the vibes. (dude just yells into the mic with his autotuned adlibs lmao)
that doesn’t feel like a concert. it’s more like an artist DJ set hyping up their own music
i love when artists are thoughtful when it comes to their shows. maybe they have a live band, beautiful set design, and/or a sick venue. those elevate the experience and make a compelling argument to spend $$$ to see them in-person
that brings us to jam band: i’ve only begun my journey through this genre but it seems so welcoming and inclusive. the community amongst fans is great + the artists let fans record their concerts to share with others
like how Grateful Dead super fans (aka Deadheads) have a fav rendition of a song from certain shows. even though it’s the same song, the vibe and soul can change from concert-to-concert. (big “you just had to be there” energy)
one size doesn’t fit all though and there’s room for all types of concerts. but i think if fans pay to see an artist perform, there should be a mutual agreement that it’ll be worth it for both parties
my plea: i wish more artists released live albums (in-concert or not) and spent energy on making the concert experience incredible
(there’s also an adjacent discussion around live albums recorded in studio, which i wanted to acknowledge how great they are as well!)

all that being said, what are some of your favorite shows that you’ve been to? let me know in the comments
and with that, let's get to the music for the week ❤️🔥

Live 105 was this alt rock radio station from The Bay that i grew up on way back when
Aaron Axelsen was the music director and host for Live 105 for over 20 years
he got laid off early 2020
Live 105 played its last show in late 2021 (RIP)
fast forward to spring 2022, he’s back as the Music Director for Flood FM, an online streaming radio station playing indie and alternative pop
Flood FM has a “hacked” series where selected artists play some of their favorites
i just so happened to turn it on randomly while playing FIFA lately and was put onto this song during Purple Disco Machine’s “hacked” set
then i come to find that he’s playing a set in Austin this week
life is wild huh?
Ain’t It Fun
Paramore
Released: 2013
Where you're from
You might be the one who's runnin' things
Well, you could ring anybody's bell and get what you want
You see, it's easy to ignore trouble
When you're livin' in a bubble
Josh’s reposts on TikTok are better than any algorithm can provide tbh. case in point, he reposted this video of Embiid highlights set to Paramore and it’s the most random pairing that actually works (and why it’s in this week’s playlist lmao):

TQG Feat. Shakira
KAROL G
Released: 2023
growing up, my dad made us feel proud to be Colombian. whether it be clothes, music, or food, we always found ways to get in touch with our culture
with the proliferation of Latin music in the US, i’m always proud when Colombian artists do well. once i found out Karol G was Colombian, i had to check her out. her latest album is fire and i love that she partnered with a historically great Colombian artist in Shakira
being popular in the US doesn’t necessarily validate their work / history, but it’s so cool to see it permeate throughout our culture. to that point, she did 91k in sales in the first week! she’s the first woman to go #1 with an all-Spanish-language album 🙏
i’m proud to be 🇨🇴
Know How I Rock Feat. Peewee Longway
Young Nudy
Released: 2021
i started playing FIFA again which has been nice. the game itself is fun and can also be mundane at the same time, which is great when i want to veg out after a long day
initially, i adjusted the settings to have no announcers and just have the game music. then i started playing without the music because it was getting repetitive. (no words, just vibes). recently though, there’s a Spotify integration that let’s me play my music while playing
i’ve been binging Nudy’s recent discography and came across this gem. i hella love Peewee’s verse too (who’s also an underrated artist in his own right). especially how he opens it:
Thirty with the switch on the G-lock
Fifty on the stick made you beatbox
Walk in the cut, grave moonwalk
You get popped like a pill when we doowop
he absolutely floats on this. check him out if you haven’t already, if not just to hear what sound pours out from this project:
childish gambino at rock the bells 2011. live band and you could tell he cared about the show he was putting on.
The Weeknd's concert special was AMAZING visually and sonically. I'm glad I watched it on the big TV on the sound bar we have. I also recently watched the Arctic Monkeys concert special (have had the live album in rotation for months) and it sounded/looked great too. I think it would be cool if rappers like Tyler The Creator or Curren$y who often do special arrangements for shows would do live albums. I'm still holding on for a live Tame Impala album especially since two albums (and several special arrangements) have been released since the last one
