memes of the week 🤠
i’m not ashamed to admit that this is me
give em hope then take it away
we are going to start a dialogue
warren buffet who?
happy Tuesday y’all :)
we’ve been doing a lot of Austin stuff lately that’s been on our bucket list:
kayaking on Lady Bird Lake (which is actually a dammed section of the Colorado River)
boating on Lake Travis (which is actually a dammed section of the Colorado River)
although we’ve been here since freshman year of COVID, this was our first time doing these!
it’s nice because it feeds into the feeling of home when we come to Austin. we’re not Austin natives, but as i’ve gotten older, i’ve come to realize is that we can make a home wherever we are. we can’t make home living in nostalgia
anyways, back to this past weekend: we went on a pontoon boat with some friends on Lake Travis because we had a friend in town and wanted to show her some true Austinite activities
we set sail and pulled up on a lil cove where people park and party:

once we got there, we set up shop and started swimming (although i didn’t swim because i’m not a strong swimmer 😅)
we played our own music which was sick. but then more people showed up and it was the biggest mashup of songs in recorded history. imagine this but with like 23 top 40 EDM / pop songs:
as time went on, more and more boats showed up and slowly drifted together to the point where i couldn’t hear myself think. it was like my anxieties creeping up altogether lmao
i desperately wanted someone to DJ to take us out of this mess. i would’ve been fine with a Pandora radio station filled with ads
it was a reminder that we all occupy our own lil worlds and that we have to coexist with each other daily. otherwise it’ll sound like the worst mashup track you’ve ever heard 🤪
and with that, let's get to the music for the week ❤️🔥

this week’s music ⤵️
Lifted Freestyle
YUNG NATION
Released: 2010? 2012?
I fly to London, I’m made in Houston
It gets to get real
We body rocking skills
Body rocking kill, my swag is ill
editor’s note: this isn’t on Apple Music unfortunately so instead goes one of their more popular singles that still has the essence of boogie
Dax sent this vid to the group chat the other day and i haven’t stopped listening to the song since. the bars are not good but the song ducking goes:
after some lightweight research, this is considered D-Town Boogie from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. it’s so cool to learn about different local movements, similar to The Bay with the hyphy movement and LA with jerking. so many subcultures from that i hope stay preserved as technology progresses 🙏
Mood Feat. BNXN
Wizkid
Released: 2021
I’m in the big mood
Girl I dey feel you
Something wey come cooli my body tell me and we'll do
I’m in the big mood
BNXN (pronounced Benson) is one of many branding attempts sans vowels. apparently this is called disemvoweling? that feels the signature of a literary serial killer
that being said, which is a business which is an artist? let me know in the comments 👀

The Spirit Of Radio
RushReleased: 1980
Begin the day with a friendly voice
A companion unobtrusive
Plays that song that's so elusive
And the magic music makes your morning mood
i only know Rush from the 2009 classic I Love You, Man lmao. it’s a movie about how hard it is to make friends as an adult with Jason Segel and Paul Rudd’s characters bonding over their mutual love of Rush:
KUTX played this (which happens to be their most popular song) the other day and i was amazed at the transition from rock to reggae towards the end of the track. lyrically, it’s mourning the transition from independent to commercialized radio in the late 70s
i love that KUTX played this because they’re the antithesis to top 40 radio 😌
Ragoo
Kings of Leon
Released: 2007
And I want to say "here's to me, go and change the world"
And I want to play until they are kicking down the door
And I'll be alright as long as I ain't seen at all
And I'm holding tight to that night we had a ball
editor’s note: every now and then there’ll be snippets from people that send me Run It Back worthy songs. they can do it justice more than i ever could, so i gave my partner Veronica (@studiodel.toro) the space to write about a song from her favorite Kings of Leon album :)
What a song and what an album! I truly enjoy this project from start to finish. I was curious so I looked into how the music world received the album when it first released.
Generally, it sounds like it was liked. However, Dave Hood from Artrocker gave the album 1 out of 5 and is quoted saying “Kings of Leon are experimenting, learning, and getting a bit lost.”
I find that review hilarious because I agree - they are experimenting, learning, and getting lost but that’s why I like it so much (and maybe because I feel like I am doing the exact same thing in my life?!?)
The arrival and steady presence of the bass is really what draws me to the song. I love when I can hear the chords so crisply and it keeps the song grooving along.
Idk what the song is supposed to be about, but I like to think it’s about these dudes who are trying to reckon with their past (whatever they have or haven’t done) and what is yet to come.
