Run It Back in a nutshell
this manifests itself by collectively asking the group “are you mad at me?”
friend homework on hard mode: 25 minute monologues
no cookie left behind
been thinking a lot about change lately. life is constantly changing and forces us to continuously pivot. what helps us through this is practicing patience
case in point: i could’ve been devastated to start the year off with an ankle injury. recovery was hard but i reframed and knew long-term i’d be good. once i got better, i got into a groove! was hooping and hitting the gym consistently again
then i got concussed. now the recovery period could be longer. can i still play basketball? will i still play? will i wear a helmet when playing? (somewhat serious on the latter lmao)
as i make my way back to full health, i know the road ahead will carry restraint filled with introspection. there’s obstacles in the way, but i’ve come to realize that the obstacle is the way
what i mean by this is not dwelling in despair and waiting until full health to get back on the horse again. okay i have a head injury and can’t do things i’d normally do, but how can i find other things to fill the void? what opportunities will come to me?
this all requires patience. it’s a timeless virtue. it will follow us as we navigate through change that life brings us
instant gratification feels so good but it’s filled with empty calories. it’s still hard for me to be patient and let its energy flow through me. i mean shit, i’m coming up on six months of being unemployed 🤪
but in times of change, we find out more about ourselves and our support system. and how even though the days can be long at times, the years fly by. it’s pretty incredible how that works
i often find myself anticipating something and/or reflecting on the past, but not appreciating the present enough. i’m learning to be patient with the present to appreciate it for what it is. the journey is the reward!
all that being said, this quote really resonates with me:
you remain dead for all eternity but you're alive only for a brief moment.
- Artyom Bogucharskiy as Volodja in Lilja 4-ever (2002)
so why not enjoy the ride while it lasts?
and with that, let's get to the music for the week ❤️🔥

this week’s music ⤵️
Treasure Island
Pearl & The Oysters
Released: 2021
oh my god, i’m in a fever dream whenever i listen to this. i zone out and soak in the immaculate psychedelic vibes. i can def see this in a romcom or romrom montage where the lead characters are in the honeymoon phase
Juliette’s vocals paint such a beautiful picture of being present. casual observations of a typical California beach hazily flow through your cerebral:
Look, the clouds are turning indigo
I’m overhearing calypso
I guess it’s time for me to go
it also reminds us that all things eventually come to an end. we can’t stay at the beach forever, we have to move on to the next chapter. change is inevitable as everything passes
but that doesn’t mean we can never go back. we have agency!
Borne
Goose
Released: 2022
an annual tradition i always look forward to: my homie Alex (along with his friends) ranking his top 10 albums from the year. i love when he shares what’s been grabbing his attention because of his broad taste in music but it’s also a way to stay connected. (it’s friend homework i’ll gladly participate in 🤠)
often times it’s hard for me to make it through his lists because there are albums i just play on repeat, with this Goose project being one of them
these lyrics speak to me hella:
I'm not tired
I'm not worn at all
I've just started
Now I'm shown around
Just what
We were born to be
a sense of purpose fuels us on this roadtrip we call life. we can find it early in life and lock in, find it further down the road, or the universe will shove it in our faces when we least expect it. regardless, we’ll find our way 🙏
Patience
Tame Impala
Released: 2019
It's always drive straight, don't be late
'Cause time waits for no one

Mutant Exotic
LSDXOXO
Released: 2021
I'm mutant exotic, homo erotic
Feel my motherfuckin' bass in your body
I could be the devil or maybe I'm a goddess
Clap your hands for Miss Mutant Exotic
when i don’t want to think about what to listen to at the gym, i just put on random Peggy Gou mixes like this one:
“Mutant Exotic” came on and i was hooked. shoutout to all the commenters for posting time-stamped set lists. like picking a bottle of wine, if an electronic song has sick vinyl artwork, it has to be worth a listen
narrator: it did not disappoint
side note: when did DJ mixes become so crisp and well-produced?? thanks COVID?
So stoked to see LSDXOXO!!! Portola shifted my music taste towards “electronic” stuff and LSDXOXO is top tier imo. Also appreciate all the good chill vibes from the other tracks - this whole volume was exactly what I needed to hear at this point in my life where I just want to fast forward through the muck!
