what are interludes? this space will focus less on the music and more on the newsletter at large. i’ll sporadically share these peaks behind the curtain on what makes Run It Back flow. hope you enjoy :)
i never know how to celebrate myself and my accomplishments lmao. it’s a hard hard thing to do because i never feel like i deserve the shine you know?
for inspiration, i loved looking back in previous years to see how we celebrated. in year 1, that was appreciation for everyone who helped contribute to the first year. second year, i wanted to share insight onto my own journey to get here + do a lil AMA on Instagram to get the ball rolling
i was nervous but i meant what i said last week: the only idea i wanted to pursue to celebrate 3 years was to interview my dad! he’s my inspiration for me and music. going to concerts together. listening to so many different genres. letting us listen to what he listens to growing up
as far as recording the interview went, i opted for low tech and recorded on my iPhone (which has surprisingly good quality!). i definitely was a little nervous as i’ve never done an interview before and never really went this deep on music with him
i used Rev.com to transcribe. there were other services but this one seemed the easiest and other major publications used it. i was gonna do it myself but read that it could take up to 4+ hours for an hour of audio, so felt my time was better spent editing down than transcribing (translation = i was lazy 🤪)
it was pricey ($$$), but the function of the web app and service received was worth it:
would i use a transcribing service for every interview? no! lmao. it’d be too much money over time for a luxury service
as far as editing and rearranging goes, it took longer than expected. i thought it’d be easy to just make some small changes here and there but there’s more to it:
some parts of the interview scatter from topic to topic, how could i rearrange to make it flow smoother?
what anecdotes would i cut out and why?
how do i edit a quote to keep the integrity of what was said instead of changing the entire thing?
how do i portray my voice and his in text form? i.e. showcasing both our personalities
to #2, there was this gem that just didn’t fit but i still wanted to share:
You know. [Living in San Francisco], I started to appreciate house music. I like certain styles.
i distinctly remember you having a lot of Fatboy Slim
i'll never forget [when i was young] and you brought me to watch you play pickup volleyball, i forget which [Fatboy Slim] album it was, but you were like, "don't play track three"
[it’s the first track i go to and] the opening line is "Fatboy Slim is fucking in heaven" on repeat 😭😭😭
Yes!
😂😂 it repeats like 20 times in a row
That's funny, that's right.
in the end, i wanted something for my sisters and i to always remember him by. and to do it through music? that’s the cherry on top
hope y’all enjoyed this peak behind the scenes 😌
